Hello, I’m Emily Damrel, a professional double bassist and music teacher located in Decatur, Georgia. Music is my passion, and there is nothing that brings me more joy than sharing it with others. I teach knowing that every student has inherent musical creativity and a unique set of educational needs. My individualized approach to instruction lets students be involved in mutual decision-making while establishing a firm foundation in technical double bass skills. Students of mine have won principal and high-ranking seats in South Carolina regional and all-state orchestras.
I began my musical journey in Greensboro, North Carolina where I immediately fell in love with the double bass through my middle school orchestra. This led me to study Music Education with a concentration in Double Bass Performance at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro where I served as the principal bassist in the University Symphony Orchestra. Since graduating, I have taught music privately and in the public schools of Charleston, SC. I have played with the Long Bay Symphony, Summerville Orchestra, and Wilmington Symphony, and I regularly gig in non-classical styles including bluegrass and old time. Noteworthy performances include the International Bluegrass Music Festival (Raleigh, NC), and a role in "Beautiful Star" (Triad Stage, Greensboro, NC).
I currently teach double bass at The Westminster Schools as well as 3rd-5th grade orchestra at Fifth Avenue Elementary in Decatur.

My son looked forward to every weekly lesson with Ms. Damrel for the last 2 years. He was able to achieve all the personal goals he'd set of making different orchestras. She prepared him well. Together, they selected great audition pieces to showcase his strengths. Ms. Damrel was so easy to reach for support when he had questions or needed her encouragement. She's the best!!
We can’t say enough great things about Emily. She captured our son’s attention with such ease and used it to focus him on his bass lessons. She is a gifted teacher and musician.

Ms.Damrel taught me for 2 years. She taught way more than a book ever could and still lets you incorporate your own ideas. I have gotten into Charleston Symphony Youth Orchestra, Region Orchestra, and 1st chair All-State because of her. She is a great teacher and is very sweet and chill (and it helps to practice).
